After heavy overnight thunderstorms here on the morning of qualifying day at Pinerolo in Italy the sun shone brightly and track dried quickly as we got ready for five rounds of qualifying. All the qualifying had been condensed into one day because of the inclement weather forecast for finals day Saturday.

Qualifying was a battle between two Scandinavian drivers, Daniel Kobbevik of Norway and David Ronnefalk of Sweden. Kobbevik took the first two rounds with his compatriot of Sweden taking the second two.

Leading to a battle royale in round five, for whoever won that race would be Top Qualifier, and after lead changing many many times, on the last lap Kobbevik claimed the TQ for the 4WD championships. Behind him was the great and the good of off road electric racing, with previous champions Michael Orlowski and Jorn Neumann in 3rd and 4th

Then the decision was made that because the weather forecast for the following day had got much worse – the finals would be run straight away!

Cue much scurrying around in the pits but after only an hour we were ready for the first of our 3 – legged A Finals, and what a three-legged final it was.

Leg 1 saw Kobbevik take the lead for just a few seconds before he was overtaken under the bridge by David Ronnefalk who then cruised to an excellent victory – giving him the all-important first win

If leg 1 had been simple, leg 2 was a confusing mess as all top drivers conspired to hit each other, fall over and crash, with the eventual winner being Marco Baruffolo from 5th through the carnage to a very good victory.

So it all came down to leg 3 with many drivers theoretically having a chance of winning. At the start Daniel Kobbevik got away and David Ronnefalk made a mistake. All looked good for Kobbevik, and in fact he did cross the line first – BUT – With a First and a Second place finish ( the same as Ronnefalk ) it would all come down to the fastest individual race time and that saw the super Swede claim his 8th EFRA European Championship across classes – and retain his 4WD championship as he had a faster time for his win in leg 1.

A fantastic event put on by a fantastic club and given the weather we eventually saw on Saturday – a great call to move the climax of the event to Friday evening.

And you can watch how the whole day unfolded here:
