For nearly 30 years, ‘crawlers’ – starting with solid-axle monster trucks and other ‘donor’ vehicles – have been growing in popularity in the RC community. Ready-made competition level kits have been available for many years, however, there hasn’t been a recognized European Championship for this beloved and still growing category of competition!
At the 2022 EFRA Annual General Meeting, Federation members from across Europe voted to bring in a new Electric Sub-Section, specifically for RC Crawler drivers. And now, EFRA needs a new Section Chairman to take the lead for the next stage of European Championships! If you’d like to lead the new Sub-Section, contact secretary@efra.ws to let EFRA know!
Crawling has become extremely popular in the past decade, and countries across Europe have hosted major weekend events bringing together hundreds of crawler enthusiasts. These events usually bring dozens of ‘casual’ drivers with their scale trucks and many drivers bring their competition-focused vehicles as well. EFRA is looking for a responsible and experienced organiser of model events to lead the charge!
Most RC crawler competition rules are based on rules originally developed in the US and expanded over the past several years to encompass varying styles of off-road vehicles. With the help of realistic looking trucks and buggies, crawlers have found fans worldwide!
While it’s easy to call crawlers ‘slow’, once attempted it’s clear that it’s much more intense and competitive than most track racers will think – while simultaneously being more relaxed once one is out on the course! Competitions are usually based on the driving skills of individual drivers combined with the technical capabilities of their vehicles to overcome natural or constructed terrain obstacles. Similar to motorcycle and 4-wheeler trials courses, judges score each driver, closely watching if the vehicle rolls backwards, flips or if the driver touches their truck.
